Immunodermatology is a multidisciplinary field of medical science that studies the immunology related to the human skin, mucous membranes, hair, and nails. It aids in the diagnosis of several dermatological conditions, including photo-immunology, inflammatory diseases such as Hidradenitis suppurativa, allergic contact dermatitis, and atopic eczema, autoimmune skin diseases such as vitiligo and psoriasis, and lastly, immunology of microbial skin diseases such as retrovirus infections and leprosy.
The skin is the largest organ and one of the prime immune organs. Various approaches are being developed to treat immunological dermatological disorders, with biologicals among the most effective therapies. These biologicals focus on neutralizing TNF-alpha and inhibiting chemokine receptors.
