Tissue expansion is a specialized plastic surgery technique designed to enhance surgical treatment for patients with scarred or damaged skin or tissue. This procedure allows for the growth of healthy skin to replace damaged skin. This reconstructive procedure can be performed on any area of the body, significantly repairing skin or tissue damaged from birth, disease, or injuries.
The operation is performed in two stages. The first involves placing a silicone balloon expander beneath the skin after making an incision in the area where tissue expansion is needed. The expander is periodically filled with saline and/or carbon dioxide until new skin forms, replacing the damaged skin. Then, in the second stage, the expander is removed from the skin. This procedure is commonly used for breast construction following mastectomy and prior to reconstructive burn surgeries.
